OOCL Donates Environmental Rebate to Charity
On Monday, June 11, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) was honored by the Port of Long Beach with Green Flags for improving air quality. On the same day, the company announced that it would make a further contribution by donating its clean air rebates – estimated at more than US$140,000 – to charities and community groups in Long Beach.
“This is unbelievably gracious gesture by OOCL,” said Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, in Hong Kong on a trade mission with members of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. “OOCL has been an outstanding corporate citizen in Long Beach, our top ‘Green Flag’ carrier and a very philanthropic community partner.”
The Port of Long Beach had launched a Green Flag program a year ago to recognize and reward ocean carriers that slowed their speed within 20 miles of Long Beach Harbor to improve air quality. OOCL was the top Green carrier in 2006, with 100 percent compliance, the highest of the Port’s major container lines.
As a result, OOCL has offered to donate its entire dockage rebate (for its 100% compliance reward) and invest it back into the community of Long Beach.
