Please be advised that Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPRR) is reducing the maximum allowable cargo weight on rail for 20’ container shipments, without an additional weight surcharge. Effective January 1, 2009: 20’ maximum cargo weight is 48,000 lbs or 21,772 kgs
40’ container cargo weight limits are unchanged.
For cargo loading from Belgium to Canada, these new guidelines come into effect for vessels sailing after December 16th, 2008.
For shipments received by CPRR until December 31, 2008:
20’ maximum cargo weight and additional rail charge:
Cargo heavier than 50,000 lbs (22,679 kgs), but no more than 55,000 (24,947 kgs) lbs is subject to a rail surcharge.
Maximum cargo weight is 55,000 lbs (24,947 kgs) for a 20-foot container. Any container loaded with more than its marked carrying capacity will not be moved.
For guidance the maximum weight allowable on Canadian Highways is 46,000 lbs or 20,865 kgs Mis-declaring cargo weight can result in additional charges. The reason for the reduction in maximum cargo weight is CPRR railcars are showing signs of fatigue (cracking) due to the heavy cargo weight.
