Conserving Resources

OOCL’s policy of conserving natural resources applies at every level of our work. Since 1993, we voluntarily introduced a Global Office Waste Reduction Plan, and as a result, the practice of Reduce, Recycle, and Re-use is meticulously followed on board our vessels and on land.

Containers

When it comes to OOCL’s containers, 80% are supplied by certified EP floorboard manufacturers. OOCL has pioneered tests using fast-growing bamboo as container flooring instead of the traditional types of hardwood which is a potential way to minimize deforestation. We are now testing another set of samples of bamboo flooring and if successful we will place test orders in our next round of dry box ordering.

Reducing and recycling resources

On board our vessels, we aim to minimise cylinder oil consumption through our alpha lubricator system. We have already reduced the cylinder oil consumption by 20% from 2004-2007.

We continue to measure the consumption of garbage bags on board and we use recycle bins on all our vessels.

In the office, OOCL is embarking on a global project to eliminate the use of fax and replace it with e-mail and other more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective communication channels.

We encourage colleagues to reduce energy consumption with the following initiatives:

Save electricity by switching off their computers, copiers and other office equipment and lights after office hours
We also encourage the use of energy saving office equipment, such as power-saving light bulbs and light timers, as well as fewer spotlights
We encourage that the office temperature should be around 25 degrees Celsius
We advise that electronic media should be used for external and internal communication and urge employees to avoid or minimize the printing of unnecessary hard copies and to reuse both sides or print on both sides to avoid wastage
We encourage employees to avoid using paper cups and to use the hand-drying machine instead of paper to dry hands
We remind colleagues to turn off taps after use
We reuse office supplies and furniture, and donate old furniture, computer and office equipment to charity
We collect used/ waste paper for recycling
Recycled or environmentally friendly paper is used for all publications
We recycle toner cartridges and use recycle bins in the office
