OOCL assists relief effort for China earthquake victims

OOCL, as a caring organization, is deeply concerned about those affected by the recent earthquake in China, which struck Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. The earthquake, measuring 8 on the Richter scale, has caused unprecedented damage and loss of life in Sichuan and neighbouring provinces in central China.

OOCL deployed two trucks carrying two 40’ containers to assist the relief efforts in Sichuan, transporting goods such as blankets and food supplies to the needy. We contacted the various relief organisations to provide several reefer (refrigerated) containers for the storage of food and medical supplies.

In addition, the company set up an "OOCL China Earthquake Relief Fund Raiser" initiative and matched every donation from colleagues, dollar-for-dollar, to this Fund. The total amount raised by colleagues worldwide was US$277,000, which was matched by the company to contribute a total US$560,000 to the relief fund. The Tung Foundation has donated a further HK$5 million (US$641,000) to assist school reconstruction work in China.

Please refer to OOCL’s local China website for updates on operations and services in the region.
