OOCL & Community

  • We recognize that the communities which we live and work contribute to our success
  • In return, we focus our community efforts in helping to provide well-rounded education to the youth, charity relief to the needy and cultural entertainment to the whole community.
The founder of the company, CY Tung originally had a vision of reviving Chinese Maritime greatness with ships owned, manned, and operated on world routes entirely by Chinese. More than this, however, CY Tung was dedicated to education for others. " I have learned there is a link between ships and education," Mr Tung was fond of saying. "They can be used for carrying ideas as well as cargo"

In line with Mr.Tung's belief and OOCL's long tradition of giving back to the communities where our employees live and work, "Tung OOCL Scholarship" was set up in 1995 to support the continued education of youth. Currently, the Tung OOCL Scholarship comprises of two programs: University Scholarship Program (China) and Employee's Children Scholarship Program.
  • The University Scholarships have been established in six renowned universities. They are Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Nanjing University. Since the establishment of the scholarship more than 2,500 undergraduate and post-graduate students have been awarded scholarships with more than US$2.3 million in funding. In each and every year, a selection panel will be set up in each university to short list the potential candidates, both undergraduates and post-graduates, based on academic results and performance, plus active participation in extra-curricular activities. With this program, we hope to facilitate the well rounded development of our youth.
  • Based on the same selection criteria, the Employees' Children Scholarship is awarded annually to the children of employees in all OOCL offices in all countries and regions. It is also open to employees of OOIL, and some of its subsidiaries.
Besides, OOCL also participates in many other types of community support with worthy purposes. One of the major and on-gong projects that OOCL is involved in is Project HOPE ( Health Opportunities for People Everywhere). OOCL is assisting with the transportation of the latest diagnostic medical equipment and supplies from the United States (donated by global corporations) to Shanghai Children's Hospital, China where those less fortunate children are able to receive the best medical care and attention. The first of 40' x 40 containers arrived in Shanghai back in May, 1998. Other community involvement includes:
