| A career at sea has enablied me to meet and make many friends throughout the world |
I started my career at sea as a Deck Cadet in September 1961, after which I attended Fleetwood Navigation College. After my Cadetship, I attended Liverpool Polytechnic on and off for a number of years in order to obtain the required certificates to progress through the ranks, until taking command of my first vessel in July 1977. It has been a very challenging, yet satisfying career, which I would not change, even though at times it has been very trying and demanding.
Life at sea has steadily improved over the years, tours of duty onboard have reduced, Officers can bring their wives with them, and with the advent of satellite communication, keeping in touch with one’s family and friends has become much easier.
A career at sea has enabled me to meet and make many friends throughout the world, and visit many of the major city’s; my favorites being Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore, Victoria on Vancouver Island, Montreal, Shanghai, Auckland, and last but not least London.
I have been asked many times what has given me the most satisfaction in my long career at sea. My answer to that is in the passing on my knowledge and the training I have given to my fellow seafarers under my command, so that one day they too will be go on to command a ship safely and create a happy environment in which to work and live safely.
It is a rewarding career at sea, in all senses of the word, and I would recommend it to any man or woman seeking a challenging and diversified career. |
