Last Saturday, March 17, 2012 marked the second workshop of the School Company Parent (SCP) program which OOCL is involved in. The program is aimed at helping secondary school students connect to the commercial world. (Please click here to read the last post we did introducing the program, its aims and benefits and giving feedback on the first orientation workshop which was held on March 10, 2012.)
At the very first workshop, students were requested to discuss each team member’s career aspirations. They then chose one person and did some basic research and analysis about the industry / job the person is interested in – and presented their findings during this second workshop. The purpose was for them to familiarize themselves with different business models and learn more about how different industries work.
After the presentations, OOCL’s Company Ambassadors (CAs) gave the students feedback to help them think how they could use this analysis to develop their own career paths. Our CAs helped to explain to the students the differences between ‘work’, ‘job’, ‘occupation’ and ‘career’ and Renwill Yang (CLP-IRIS-ISD-OOCLL/HKG) then shared his personal career development with the students so they could see the real benefits of career planning. The CAs then helped the students become more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses through several fun games.
Our CAs also briefed the students on practical matters such as typical job application processes and used sample job advertisements to teach them how to evaluate whether or not a job description matches their career aspirations and requirements.
To get a feel for a real office environment, the students will visit one of our offices as part of the next workshop on April 3, 2012. There will be 3 more workshops after that, with the final one falling mid May, 2012.
Stay tuned for the next update!
