The fourth workshop for the School-Company-Parent (SCP) Program was held on Saturday, April 21 with the theme “Qualities of Entrepreneurship”.
This workshop began with an interview with Polly Cheung (COM-AET-TRADE/HKG) by Donald Tse (SHP-IRIS-ISD-OOCLL/HKG), one of the OOCL’s Company Ambassadors (CAs).
Polly introduced herself by telling the students how she progressed through her career path at OOCL from starting with sales and marketing to her current role in Trade management.
She shared her experience of how Intra-Asia Trade management has ridden out the financial tsunami in 2008-2009 by building good rapport and earning trust and respect of all stakeholders. The lesson learned is the importance of managing relationships in people business and facing difficulties by turning them into opportunities.
Polly also told the students how determination and persistence have helped her overcome challenges over the years and how she has learned and developed this spirit as a teenager from the role model in her life. Polly reminded the students of the importance of believing in what they are doing, and of setting goals and doing what they can to reach them.
By highlighting Relationship Management and some of OOCL’s Core Competencies - Customer Focus, Result Orientation, Communication, and Teamwork, Polly talked about how employers take these into consideration when recruiting and promoting their employees. She also told the students that some key qualities such as passion for work, drive for achievement, independent thinking, dedication and commitment are what employers would look for in their employees.
Polly closed by encouraging the students by sharing her motto: “Life is full of opportunities, but opportunities are only for those who are well-prepared.” The students were very impressed by Polly’s determined attitude and learned that they need to be very focused on their goals in order to achieve them.
Stay tuned for the fifth workshop with the theme “My Career Plan”! Students will get to experience job interviews through some games, and will also learn the job application techniques which include writing cover letters and résumés as well as interviewing skills.
