Voice from Joe To-HKIE graduate trainee
OOCL IT
We use email, Tibbr, IM and the telephone to communicate with one another on a daily basis in the office. These channels seem to meet our communication needs sufficiently. So why do we still need to have face-to-face meetings?

Face to face communication can eliminate many barriers between people; enabling us to be more connected and engaged. I definitely found this to be the case during my six month rotation experience in the Infrastructure team. I was working on a project which required cooperation with colleagues in Zhuhai. At the beginning, I thought it didn’t make sense to travel 4 hours just for a face-to-face meeting. However, I discovered that it was really worthwhile to do so.

We made eye contact and exchanged ideas and opinions not only verbally but also through facial expressions and body language; something that is just not possible through electronic channels. Meeting face to face allowed us to understand one another better and built trust between us. This was important as the project progressed.

It was then I realized that meeting face to face can lay the foundations of effective communication, which results in better collaboration. Enabling effective communication is part of the culture here at OOCL.
