IPv6 Test and Implementation Strategy at OOCL
The World IPv6 Day on June 8 revealed that IPv6 is ready for global scale deployment on Internet. Although OOCL, holder of a Class B IPv4 address space, doesn’t see an immediate need to migrate internal IP address scheme to IPv6, we do see the need to embrace IPv6 at external websites to support customers. When IPv4 addresses run out in the Internet community in near future, customers would only get IPv6 addresses from their ISP. OOCL will adopt “dual-stacks” approach at its Internet websites such that customers can access our Internet websites regardless of whether they are using IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. The testing on this has been started. IPv6 has been enabled on a Verizon Internet circuit, advertising the OOCL’s IPv6 address block to Internet. Dual-stacks support on IPv4 and IPv6 will be enabled on firewall, load balancer and server subsequently. The target plan is to enable OOCL’s Internet presence in IPv6 world (external websites, e-mail and DNS) by 2012.
