OOCL's Reefer Technology

Reefer is the generic name for a temperature controlled container. The containers, which are insulated, allow temperature controlled air to circulate within the container. A Reefer is not only a refrigerator. Reefers can provide heat as well as remove it. OOCL has a fleet of over 12,000 units of containers, including 20’, 40’ and 40’ high cube reefers. Please refer to Equipment Specifications for more details.

Controlled Atmosphere Reefer Containers

OOCL has invested in controlled atmosphere containers (see below), which maintain the ideal atmosphere for sensitive produce. Controlled atmosphere technology can prolong the self-life of your goods. OOCL's Controlled Atmosphere reefer containers maintain a constant atmosphere by replacing consumed oxygen through a unique air exchange system, maintaining an ideal atmosphere in equilibrium with the product's deterioration rate.

Benefits of Controlled Atmosphere:

  • Delays aging, ripening, and associated changes in product
  • Reduces water loss and weight shrinkage
  • Allows longer transit time, so shipments can go to further destinations and/or to new markets
  • Provides better quality control
  • Improves control of insects in some commodities

Controlled Atmosphere System (TransFresh)

  1. Container is loaded with cargo.
  2. A plastic curtain seals the container.
  3. A gas (typically nitrogen) is pumped in to slow ripening.
  4. Air is forced out.
  5. Container includes a gas inject or exhaust port.
  6. A controller monitors and records the temperature, oxygen, and carbon dioxide levels.
  7. Cargo consumes oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide.

If the carbon dioxide levels exceed preset levels, the controller signals the scrubber to compensate by circulating air through hydrated lime.

AFAM+  (Automatic Fresh Air Management)

AFAM+ is an advanced technology which regulates air combination by auto adjusting the scale of   Fresh Air Exchange.  It works similar to CA (Controlled Atmosphere) to control the composition of oxygen, carbon dioxide and others.  The AFAM+ can be adjusted to influence and extend the shelf live of vegetables & fruits.

Aluminium + Stainless steel

OOCL's reefer containers have alumimum exteriors and die-stamped, corrugated stainless steel linings for improved all-round air circulation. In addition, this design results in lesser tare-weight, larger payload and useable capacity.

Scroll Compressor

The move to scroll compressors marks one most technological advances in transport temperature control. The scroll offers greater reliability, significantly less weight, higher efficiency, lower noise and easier serviceability. Combined with the use of R-404A refrigerant, the new box provides precise temperature control in all ranges and superior cooling capacity at low box temperatures.

Large Evaporator Coil

To help better protect the cargo from excessive dehydration, the new reefer evaporator coil was designed with a larger surface area to provide less temperature differential across the coil. The moisture stays in the fruit and vegetables where it belongs, thereby maintaining more of the original weight and juiciness than when it was harvested.

Bottom-air Delivery

Now all OOCL's reefer containers come with bottom-air delivery systems. These ensure the cool air from the refrigeration unit circulates evenly inside the container, absorbing the heat given off by the cargo before returning to the unit. Bottom-air delivery systems are effectively used for temperature-sensitive cargo that requires precise controlled cool air distribution.

Microprocessors

Our reefers’ microprocessors use new proportional-integral-derivative temperature control algorithm to regulate the air temperature, result in a more accurate temperature control.

Partlow Recorder and Microprocessor Data Logger

The Partlow recorder is a mechanical temperature recorder. Unlike the microprocessor data logger, the technician can read the real time as well as the historical temperature readings from the chart immediately without downloading the data into handheld computer. It greatly help the technicians to understand the potential probelm and rectify it at the right time. OOCL also uses the Microprocessor Data Logger as a backup device.

De-humidity Control

We have upgraded our reefer equipment to include dehumidification capabilities, especially catering to your humidity-sensitive shipments. OOCL now offers you the new Thermo-King Smart Reefer with state-of-the-art technology, which allows you the precisely control the relative humidity inside your container to levels between 55% and 95%. Excess moisture, which can cause mould to grow on your cargoes, can now be avoided.

Power Supply

A refrigeration plant is built into the rear of the container. For OOCL's reefers, power for this plant needs to be provided from an external source. Portable gensets provide a power source for refrigeration units during long, overland transits. In OOCL, three kinds of Gensets are used -- Clip-on, Sidemount and Centermount. Clip-on are aerodynamically design and quick-disconnect clamps for mounting on the upper front container casting. Usual for train; high center of gravity; vulnerable to damage. Sidemount fastens to the side of the container chassis and Centermount fastens to the center of the container chassis. Leaves maximum road clearance.

CFC Free

To preserve the earth’s environment, OOCL has installed new CFC-free refrigerants, R134A or R404A in all our reefer containers.
