OOCL Gets Computerworld Honors Program Nomination

Orient Overseas Container Lines (OOCL) is pleased to announce that on April 11, 2006, it received notification that the company has become a Computerworld Honors Program® 2006 Laureate.
This is the second time that OOCL has become a Laureate, having been nominated for IRIS-2 in 1999 by Hewlett-Packard (HP). This year OOCL were nominated by EMC Corporation, a world leader in products, services, and solutions for information storage and its management.

The Computerworld Honors Program® is governed by the Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation. Established in 1988, The Computerworld Honors Program® is dedicated to a singular and ongoing mission: "A Search for New Heroes." This search annually identifies and records the accomplishments of the men and women, organizations and institutions that are leading the world's ongoing IT revolution.

Each year, members of the Chairmen's Committee identify the organizations whose use of information technology has been especially noteworthy for the originality of its conception, the breadth of its vision and the significance of its benefit to society. These identified organizations are asked to contribute a case study to the program's collection, and the donation of these case studies is celebrated with a formal medal ceremony.

OOCL submitted a case study on the replacement of its mainframe system, IRIS-2, with an open systems environment. This robust enterprise system, synchronizes real-time shipment information 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and the implementation of a data classification initiative and the launch of web-based service portals - CargoSmart and DepotSmart - facilitated online shipment and transactions and communications between parties in the logistics chain.

OOCL’s goal was to implement a system where customers, depot vendors and their partners could access 100 percent of their shipping information online without interruption anytime, anywhere.

OOCL is delighted to see that this project has continued to help those for whom it was designed. As of early 2006, over 35,000 customers and more than 560 depot vendors worldwide are benefiting from the new system. It has provided customers, depots, and other carriers a highly available, open and accessible system that seamlessly integrates with all customers’ and carriers’ enterprise systems. As a result, customers experience and satisfaction have dramatically improved and it has helped raise the standard of customer service in the entire industry.

The OOCL enterprise system IRIS-2 and the web portals CargoSmart and DepotSmart provide a Vital Link to world trade.
