OOCL Carries The Phantom of the Opera Back to Hong Kong

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) is proud to announce that it is, once again, the official ocean carrier of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most loved musical, The Phantom of the Opera.

At 4:00pm on Tuesday, June 27, the 22 container boxes, carrying the magnificent props, costumes and set design for Phantom arrive at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre to prepare for the most memorable season of this universally-adored musical.

Included among these stunning objects is the replica of the Paris Opera House chandelier, which is made up of some 6,000 beads. The chandelier is three meters wide and weighs one ton. The original chandelier took five people four weeks to build.

Second only to the magnificent chandelier is the carving of the angel, a signature stage prop for Phantom.

Over the coming two weeks, technical crews and creative teams from all over the world will work to transform the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre into the Paris Opera House as it was in the 18th Century.

There are 130 cast and crew members directly involved in each Phantom performance. In addition, there are 230 costumes, requiring 14 dressers, 22 scene changes, 281 candles and 250kg of dry ice needed per performance. Ten fog and smoke machines are also used for the ghostly scene of boat ride in the underground water passages of Paris.

By moving the 22 containers required for The Phantom of the Opera, OOCL is once again providing a Vital Link for cargo as well as musical theater and culture. Timing is everything on stage but it is just as important behind the scenes, and OOCL is the master of timing, moving stage sets, props and costumes from Australia to Shanghai, to Seoul, to Taipei, and now to Hong Kong.
