OOCL Australia Named at Shanghai Shipyard

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) is proud to announce the Thursday, November 30th christening of its second 4,583-TEU vessel built by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. The newbuilding was named the m.v. OOCL Australia by Sponsor Dr Alan Thomas, Australian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, at Wharf Five, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, in Shanghai, China.

Dr Thomas spoke at the ceremony, “I am honored to have been invited to attend today’s christening ceremony at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyards.”

“OOCL’s liner services include regular loops to Australia, linking our two countries with the world. I congratulate them on the new acquisition to their already impressive fleet,” he said.

The OOCL Australia will be deployed on the Australia China Express route, serving the Asia-Australia trade.

Mr CC Tung, Chairman and CEO of Orient Overseas (International) Ltd., said “OOCL has been linking Australia with the world for over three decades. Some 33 years ago, the OOCL Ambassador, an 800-TEU ship began our services to and from Australia. I am proud to see today that the OOCL Australia, a 4,583 TEU newbuilding continues that long tradition.”

“I am happy to say that once again, OOCL ships represent the most modern in their class, and that OOCL continues to demonstrate our commitment to providing a Vital Link to world trade, and to providing the best service available to our customers,” said Mr Tung.

“The OOCL Australia is the second of the two 4,500-TEU ships we have ordered here at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard. We are very grateful to be working with Hudong on these vessels, and hope that this newest additional to our fleet will be merely a beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.”

The OOCL Australia’s route has a port rotation of: Kaohsiung / Hong Kong / Shanghai / Chiwan / Hong Kong / Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane and back to Kaohsiung for a 35-day round trip.
