OOCL Washington and OOCL Le Havre named at Geoje Shipyard, Korea

OOCL is proud to announce on January 8, 2010, the christening of our newest vessels, the OOCL Washington (8,063 TEU) and the OOCL Le Havre (4,578 TEU) at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje island, Korea.

The m.v. OOCL Washington was named by sponsor Mrs Karen Green, the wife of Mr Fred Green, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Pacific Railway.

The m.v. OOCL le Havre was named by Mrs Harriet Tung, the wife of Mr CC Tung, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL).

Mr CC Tung hosted the naming ceremony on behalf of the OOIL Group. Mr. J W Kim, the Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries, also attended the joint naming ceremony.

“I believe it is essential for vendors – from shipbuilders to carriers and land transport providers such as Canadian Pacific – to work closely together and assist each other through the difficult times of the current economic downturn. By doing so, we can ensure a seamless international supply chain for our customers, and we can be optimistic that our industry will enjoy a full recovery in the shortest time frame possible,” said Mr Tung, speaking at the ceremony.

“I am certain that the OOCL Washington, and the OOCL Le Havre, as ambassadors for world trade, will proudly live up to their names.  Samsung Heavy Industries has built many great ships for OOCL, combining optimum performance with cost efficiency. With such vessels, OOCL can improve the service we provide to our customers, offering greater economies of scale, increased capacity and higher frequency of sailings,” said Mr Tung.

The OOCL Washington will be deployed on the EU Loop C service and OOCL Le Havre will be deployed on the China India Express (CIX) service.

OOCL Washington is the thirteenth SX class vessel (8,063 TEU) in the line of sixteen SX class vessels, and OOCL Le Havre is the thirteenth Panamax class vessel in OOCL’s line of sixteen 4,500-TEU vessels ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries.
