OOCL Guangzhou named at Geoje Shipyard, Korea

OOCL is proud to announce on May 17, 2010, the christening of our newest vessel, the OOCL Guangzhou, the fourteenth in our line of sixteen 4,578 TEU vessels on order from Samsung Heavy Industries.

The OOCL Guangzhou was named by sponsor Mr Li Ning, founder and Chairman of the Li Ning Company Limited, a leading sportswear brand headquartered in China.

Mr CC Tung, Chairman and CEO of OOIL Group, hosted the ceremony which was held at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island, Korea. Guests of honour included Mr. Zhang Xiao Yan, Director of Government and Public Affairs of Li Ning Company Limited, and Mr SY Bae, President and Shipyard General Manager of Samsung Heavy Industries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tung said, “Mr Li is not only one of China’s most celebrated Olympic athletes; he has combined athletic ability with commercial strength to build one of the world’s leading sports brands.  Such achievements represent the infinite possibilities in today’s China. OOCL, through our logistics subsidiary OOCL Logistics, enjoys a strong business relationship with the Li Ning Company, offering a major distribution centre in the Guangzhou region. As global brands with a Chinese heart, we share similar philosophies and values. We look forward to building and strengthening this relationship in the years to come.”

Mr Tung added, “As the world’s third largest trading nation, China has an important role to play in driving the global economy towards recovery. Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, is one of China’s most affluent and dynamic cities, and one of the world’s busiest ports. We are glad to see that industrial production in the region is once again buoyant and imports and exports are surging. It remains to be seen if the recovering trade flows will be felt in the container shipping sector, where rate improvements remain fragile. As a champion of world trade, I am certain the OOCL Guangzhou will proudly live up to her name.”

The m.v. OOCL Guangzhou will be deployed on the South China East Coast Express (SCE) Service.

The port rotation is: Kaohsiung / Shekou / Hong Kong / Balboa / Kingston / New York / Norfolk/ Savannah / Cristobal and back to Kaohsiung in a 56-day round trip.
