Update on Containership MOL Comfort Incident
Dear Valued Customer,
This customer advisory is an update to our June 18 broadcast titled “Containership MOL Comfort in Distress”.
As reported by our alliance partner, MOL, we regret to inform you that the aft section of their containership MOL Comfort sank in the open sea near 14’26”N / 66’26”E (water depth of about 4,000m) at 16:48 JST (11:48 Dubai time) on June 27, after having suffered extensive damage to the hull since June 17 that later caused the vessel to split into two sections.
At this time, the fore section of the vessel is still afloat and we understand that our partner has arranged a salvage operation to rescue the hull and the cargo with tug boats. It has been reported that the fore section is currently being towed towards the direction of the Arabian Gulf with the majority of cargo on board. Its destination has yet to be confirmed.
Approximately 1,700 containers that were loaded in the aft section are reported to have now been lost at sea. Based on available stowage information, we advise our customers with shipments on this vessel to notify their cargo underwriters of this incident if the cargo is insured.
For further information regarding your cargo, please contact our local Customer Service Representative for details.
To minimize the impact on the LP1 eastbound service, the G6 Alliance partners have arranged the vessel NYK Orion to phase in to the LP1 and take the place of MOL Comfort.
We are in close contact with the ship owner and will update you when we have more information. We appreciate your understanding.
