Nationwide Truckers Strike Called Off
This is to inform  that the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) nationwide strike has been called off effective 4th July 2008

Nationwide truckers strike :

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has gone on a indefinite interstate truckers strike w.e f 02.07.8 . The AIMTC has gone for a strike with the demand of withdrawal of circular issued by Income tax Department on May 16 towards the recovery of tax arrears since 2001.

This indifinite strike is expected to seriously impact the movement of goods by road, as more than 4 million trucks are participating in the strike all over the country .

There is, however, some relief for the trade in Maharashtra as well as Port users as the Nhava Sheva Container Operators Welfare Association (NSCOWA) and the Maharashtra Heavy Vehicles and Interstate Container Operators Association (MHVICOA) have decided not to take part in the agitation. While NSCOWA has no plan to participate in the stir, MHVICOA has postponed its decision to July 14 following some assurances from the state government. The Bombay Goods Transport Association is, however, participating in the strike.

Over 75 per cent of the total cargo in the country is transported by road. This includes commodities like cement, fertilisers, foodgrains and steel, general cargo like FMCG products, leather goods and high-value cargo like refrigerators, electronics and other white goods.

Though truck owners in some states like West Bengal, Orissa, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are also staying out of the general strike, it will not help in easing the pressure. The striking goods transport agencies (GTAs) control over 90 per cent of the total cargo carried by road.
