CHENNAI PORT STRIKE UPDATE
There was an altercation between the trailer drivers and Chennai Port Trust employees. This resulted in a complete closure of all the Gates leading to and from Chennai Port bringing the entire port evacuation to a grinding halt. This includes CCT,CITPL,Bulk and Petroleum trucks. However in the meantime the Vessel Operations continue resulting in alarming yard occupancy and low productivity. All India Truckers Association strike has not helped the situation either.
All talks so far has failed and the drivers refusing to call off the strike unless and until Gate 2A is opened for movement of cntrs. Currently all movements is through one gate which has resulted in poor turnaround of trucks ranging more than two days.
Terminal facility (MDS01-CCTL) yard, import stock has reached 14500teus, presently two vessels (Hansa Centaur & Hanjin Buenos Aires) in berth struggling hard to complete imports, vessel operation has come to stand still due to shortage of yard space.
All stake holders are collectively conducting meetings with port officials/traffic department to resolve trailer driver/cleaners demands, their main issue is to open additional gates to ensure smooth flow of traffic & fast turn-around of trailer trip.
With the current scenario, all operation at the chennai terminal has come to grinding halt.
We are closely monitoring the situation and shall keep you posted of the developments.
