Officially the Republic of Indonesia, the country is located in Southeastern Asia, and consists of an archipelago of 17,508 islands (6,000 inhabited) between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic nation, bordered by the nations of Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Malaysia. Jakarta (also spelled Djakarta or DKI Jakarta, formerly Batavia, as well as Jayakarta) is Indonesia’s capital. It has an area of 661.52 square kilometers, with a population of 8,792,000 (in 2004).
Indonesia’s economy suffered greatly in the late 1990s, partly due to the financial crisis that struck most of Asia at the time. It has stabilized since then. Indonesia has extensive natural resources outside Java, including crude oil, natural gas, tin, copper and gold. Major agricultural products include palm oil, rice, tea, coffee, spices and rubber.
