Romania is located in Southeastern Europe and borders Hungary and Serbia to the West; Ukraine and Moldova to the Northeast and Bulgaria to the South. The Black Sea, with the port of Constanta, is to the East of the country. Romania's capital and largest city is Bucharest. Romania has the seventh largest population (over 22 million) in the EU and is the largest country in Southeastern Europe. A large part of Romania's border with Serbia and Bulgaria is formed by the Danube River.
Romania is a democratic republic, which has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007. With a GDP per capita (PPP) of $12,285 estimated for 2008, Romania is considered to be an upper-middle income country economy. Trade is mostly centred on the member states of the European Union, with Germany and Italy being the country's single largest trading partners. However, Romania maintains a large trade deficit. In 2009 Romania suffered more than most of its neighbors in the global economic downturn. Gross domestic product contracted 7.1% in the third quarter of 2009 from the same period a year earlier, and the IMF estimates that the budget deficit will be as high as 7.8% of GDP.
