The Country

Singapore (also known as the Lion City) is an island of about 692.7 square kilometers, and is located at the southern tip of West Malaysia and at the Northern Archipelago of the Indonesian islands. Singapore is home to more than 4.4 million people and is one of the most culturally diversified, multi-racial, metropolitan cities in the world. Singapore has produced the award-winning Changi International Airport, it has one of the world’s busiest seaport, the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), and is situated along the world’s busiest shipping lane - the Straits of Malacca. By 2009, with the completion of two Integrated Resorts, Singapore will be transformed into a world-class entertainment centre.
Economy overview
Singapore, a highly developed and successful free market economy, enjoys a remarkably open and corruption-free environment, stable prices, and a per capita GDP equal to that of the Big 4 West European countries. The economy depends heavily on exports, particularly in electronics and manufacturing. In the coming years, the government hopes to establish a growth path that will be less vulnerable to the external business cycle and will continue efforts to establish Singapore as Southeast Asia's financial and high-tech hub. Fiscal stimulus, low interest rates, a surge in exports, and internal flexibility led to vigorous growth in 2004, with real GDP rising by 8 percent, by far the economy's best performance since 2000.
