The Country
Taiwan is located at the southeastern coast of Chinese mainland, about the midway between Korea and Japan, to the north and Hong Kong with the Philippines to the south.
Taiwan and its adjacent islands have an area of nearly 36,000 square kilometers. The main island of Taiwan, slightly smaller than the Netherlands, is about 394 km (245 miles) long and 144 km (90 miles) wide at the broadest point.
Taiwan has no natural resources, yet the island has prospered and become one of East Asia's economic “Tigers.”
In dollar amounts, Taiwan’s exports and imports were US$189.4 billion and US$181.6 billion respectively in 2005. Taiwan's current reserve of foreign exchange, US$225.8 billion, is the third largest in the world. Taiwan is also a major investor throughout Southeast Asia.
Taiwan’s capital city of Taipei is the home to Taipei 101, the tallest building of the world and the world-famous National Palace Museum which houses the world's largest collection of Chinese treasures.

Ocean transportation is vital to the trading-oriented economy of Taiwan. The three container ports of Kaohsiung, Keelung, and Taichung handle over 12 millions TEU per annum.
