  • OOCL upgrades Atlantic Express service

The joint service to be upgraded is the "Atlantic Express" or ATX service. Starting from early March 2008, the service will consist of four 4,000 TEU capacity vessels, one of which will be provided by ZIM and the other three from the Grand Alliance.

The service offers weekly, fixed day sailings between the North European ports of Rotterdam, Hamburg, Le-Havre, and Southampton, and the US East Coast ports of New York, Norfolk and Charleston.

The service will replace the four smaller ships of 2,800 TEU currently operating on the ATX route with larger, more efficient tonnage. This move will considerably reduce the bunker consumption per slot-mile, offering a more environmentally friendly solution.

The Grand Alliance, formed in 1998, is the leading integrated consortium in global container shipping. Its members are Hapag-Lloyd (Germany), MISC Berhad (Malaysia), NYK (Japan) and OOCL (Hong Kong). MISC Berhad does not provide any trans-Atlantic services.
  • OOCL donates $40,000 to Long Beach Education Foundation

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has donated US $40,000 to the California-based Long Beach Education Foundation, the Long Beach Unified School Districts fundraising arm. The money was designated for two outstanding schools: $20,000 for the Elizabeth Hudson K-8 Academys middle school level computer laboratory, and $20,000 for the Poly High School Pac Rim language laboratory.

The donation was presented at the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education meeting on January 22, 2008 by Anthony Otto, vice president of OOCLs wholly-owned subsidiary, Long Beach Container Terminals Inc (LBCTI). The donation was accepted by Dr. Henry Fung, President of Long Beach Education Foundation and Judy Seal, the executive director of the Foundation.

OOCL is dedicated to helping provide education to the young people in the communities where we live and work. The programs designated to receive our donations are preparing students for the global marketplace. These schools have a vision for their students futures, and we support programs that open the doors of opportunity to all students, said Anthony Otto. The Pac Rim language lab will offer students cutting edge second language instruction. Hudson K-8 Academy is an outstanding example of an inner-city school providing first-class preparation for college and beyond. OOCL and LBCTI are pleased to be joining the Hudson Hawks by providing middle school students with a new computer lab.

The money comes from rebates given to OOCL on dockage fees for compliance with a Port of Long Beach environmental program, the Green Flag Program. The voluntary program provides rebates for vessels and carriers that reduce their speed as they enter the Long Beach Harbor, thus reducing emissions. OOCL maintained a 100 percent compliance with the program in 2006.

Port of Long Beach announce OOCL's 100% compliance to the Green Flag Program

The Port of Long Beach recognizes shipping lines as leaders in implementing the Green Flag vessel speed-reduction program designed to reduce pollution from vessels using the harbor.

We are pleased to announce the 2007 Green Flag Compliance Results for OOCL vessels calling the Port Of Long Beach. Once again our Masters and sea staff have excelled in complying 100% and as a result we will continue to enjoy reduced dockage fees at the Port Of Long Beach in 2008.

We extend our thanks and appreciation to all the Masters and sea staff for their strict compliance to this important local environmental initiative and request their continued support.

When a vessel's speed is reduced to 12 knots within 20 miles of the port, harmful emissions are significantly reduced. Last year, the speed-reduction program prevented 400 tons of pollution from being released into the environment.
