As from 19th May 2006, the Baltic Sea was designated a special area under the MARPOL 73/78 Convention requiring vessels operating in the area to use fuel oil with a sulphur content not exceeding 1.5%. In response, a Low Sulphur Fuel Surcharge was introduced for ports in the area affected by this requirement.
