Dangerous Goods to Canada
Emergency Response Assistance Plans

Ref : TPT-2007-19

ANNOUNCEMENT

Transport or Imports Certain Dangerous Goods To Canada
Emergency Response Assistance Plans

Dear Customers,

According to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act – Part 7 from the Canada Transport, requires that before a person offers for transport or imports certain dangerous goods, the person must have an approved Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP). Part 7 and Column 7 of Schedule I of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR) prescribe the dangerous goods and the concentration or quantity for which an ERAP is required.

The ERAPs are not required for all dangerous goods. They are required only for the Dangerous Goods listed in Column 7 of Schedule I of the TDGR. In order to comply with the TDGR, an approved plan is required prior to certain dangerous goods entering the transportation system. Part 7 indicates the need for and the process to follow in order to obtain the approval of an ERAP. The reference number will be issued in writing by Transport Canada upon the approval of the ERAP. The reference number and activation telephone number must be displayed on the shipping document accompanying the consignment for which the plan is applicable.

The Transport Dangerous Goods Web site at http://www.tc.gc.ca/tdg/menu.htm has a sample plan to assist in preparing a plan.

As a reminder any time the weight of a DG substance exceeds the amount noted on the list the Shipper MUST provide the ERAP information for the shipment. If an ERAP is required but not provided the container may not be allowed to discharge the vessel. Carrier can not transport any DG substance that requires an ERAP in Canada without first receiving the ERAP information.
