Sustainable Management of Resources
Environmental Care

OOCL's policy of conserving natural resources applies at every level of our work. We are seeking to reduce the amount of resources being used and waste being generated, therefore the practice of Reduce, Recycle, and Re-use (3R) is meticulously followed on board our vessels and containers, as well as on land.

Vessel and Container

  • Incinerating waste onboard by using certified equipment, in accordance with MARPOL's requirements;
  • Operating homogenisers and oil purifiers to minimise the development of sludge;
  • Minimising cylinder oil consumption through our alpha lubricator system;
  • Introducing the use of eco-friendly bamboo floors instead of the traditional hardwood ones for our container, which is a potential way to minimise deforestation;
  • Applying the onboard waste management system and garbage management plan and deploy appropriate waste recycling and handling facilities to minimise the waste disposal to landfill; and
  • Considering developing and introducing innovative and latest onboard waste management solutions to address waste reduction.

Office

  • Facilitating the initiative of “Green Office" by encouraging the employees to comply with our environmental guidelines, which encourages the use of energy saving office equipment, such as maintaining the office temperature should be around 25 degrees Celsius;
  • Creating a “paperless office" environment by eliminating the use of unnecessary paper documents; and
  • Introducing and promoting saving, reusing and recycling programs to reduce water consumption and minimise the waste disposal to landfill.

OOCL Sustainability Data Collection e-Platform

The OOCL Sustainability Data Collection e-Platform is a comprehensive tool that collects, consolidates, monitor and verifies our environmental-related KPIs (e.g. energy consumption, water consumption, waste disposal, material purchases and recycling). The data covers the group's activities of our vessels and global offices.

The platform is used for internal assessment to analyse the hotspots and performance of our energy consumption, water consumption and waste disposal on a monthly basis. Through regular analysis, opportunities can be identified to further enhance our environmental performance of the above areas across our global operations. Where applicable, appropriate follow-up actions and improvement measures could be taken.

To ensure data accuracy and completeness, submitted KPIs are accompanied by supporting documentation, which is subject to internal checks and third-party assurance as part of our annual sustainability disclosure verification process.
