Hot Meal Preparation and Delivery to Give Warmth and Care to the Underprivileged

In an effort to give back to the community, this year Hong Kong (China) colleagues once again volunteered at the St. James’ Settlement (SJS) to prepare and deliver hot meals to the underprivileged.

Our Hong Kong (China) colleagues and their family members and friends volunteered in the Meal Preparation and Delivery Services held on three Saturdays from August to September 2018. Volunteers first gathered at SJS’s Kowloon Central Kitchen for the meal preparation. After a briefing by SJS’s staff on the background of the Hot Meal Service and its latest developments, volunteers started packing freshly cooked food into meal boxes.

The Hot Meal Service aims to provide high-quality nutritional meal services to people with different needs among the community. Following the instruction of SJS’s staff, volunteers worked in groups to pack rice, various meat and vegetables to designated compartments of the meal boxes. Combination of food in the meal boxes varied, which suit different dietary needs caused by physical or other conditions.

While most meal boxes were then sent to service centers for recipients to pick up, some had to be delivered to homes of elderly people who had limited mobility. The delivery of meal boxes was the second part of our volunteering service – where volunteers paired in groups and went to nearby housing estates to distribute the hot meal boxes to the elderly. Apart from delivering hot meals, our volunteers also engaged with elderly through friendly chats and warm smiles.
