Joint Press Release issued by Freightliner Ltd and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL)

OOCL Express Naming Ceremony

On 21 November 2001 Freightliner Ltd officially named one of its new class 66 diesel locomotives ‘OOCL Express’ to symbolise the dedication of a daily train service to its ten-year contract with customer Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).

‘The decision by Freightliner to dedicate a new and very reliable locomotive worth over £1.5 million to the contract is in line with our strategy to increase the efficiency of our services. It means we can achieve high reliability targets and improve cost and time efficiencies, thereby improving the quality of service for customers who would otherwise turn to road haulage,’ said Peter Maybury, joint managing director of Freightliner Ltd.

Locomotive no.66534 was named at the ceremony at Freightliner’s Manchester terminal by Ted Wang, Managing Director, OOCL (Europe) Limited who said, “This locomotive and the contract for a dedicated daily block train between Manchester and Southampton allows us to provide superior service to our customers in the North of England. It allows greater reliability compared to transport on roads which get more and more congested. It allows more flexibility as collection and delivery arrangements can now be arranged more confidently throughout the day which can give benefits to all parties.”

A ten-year contract is unusual in the Intermodal industry that normally negotiates contracts of this nature on an annual basis. The contract reaffirms the confidence OOCL has in Freightliner and the rail freight industry to deliver a quality service.

Freightliner Limited is Britain’s biggest Intermodal freight transport operator. The company operates over 100 daily trains supported by a road fleet to provide Intermodal transport. Internet web site: www.freightliner.co.uk
