OOCL Long Beach Makes Maiden Call at Long Beach Container Terminal

OOCL Long Beach, the second of the ten 8,063-TEU SX Class vessel delivered to OOCL from Samsung Heavy Industries, arrived at Long Beach Container Terminal, USA, on 25 July, on its maiden port call at the Port of Long Beach.

The vessel docked at Long Beach Container Terminal, at the Pier F facility leased by an OOCL subsidiary. OOCL Long Beach has leapfrogged a generation of 6,600 TEU vessels that made their first calls at Long Beach only four years ago and has become the largest container vessel ever berthed at the port of Long Beach.

OOCL Long Beach is 1,056 feet, or 323 meters, long - nearly the length of four football fields. It is 140 feet, or 42.8 meters wide, wide - enough for 17 containers. This new generation of SX-class vessel, OOCL Long Beach, is designed with many environmentally-friendly features including specially designed hull which allows the vessel to consume less fuel, but maintain a very high service speed of 25 knots. The vessel is also designed to burn Low Sulphur fuel with much reduced SOx gases emission to the environment. Tin-free SPC paint is used to reduce toxicity to marine life.
