OOCL’s seventh SX-class (8,063 TEUs) vessel, OOCL Atlanta, was named today in the Geoje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea – the yard where it was built.
The Chairman of OOIL, Mr. CC Tung, was present in the ceremony accompanied by his two daughters, Mrs. Leigh Tung Chou and Ms. Pamela Tung, who were the co-sponsors of the vessel.
OOCL Atlanta is the first SX-class vessel delivered to OOCL in 2005. Together with the six already delivered, OOCL Atlanta has passed the half way mark in OOCL’s 12 SX-class order with Samsung Heavy industries.
With 2005 expected to be a challenging yet successful year for the container shipping, Mr. CC Tung was optimistic about the future. “Consumer confidence and demand in the major import economies of Europe and North America are maintaining their strength. Meanwhile, we have seen a large growth in manufacturing in Asia, especially China, creating new sources of cargo,” he said. “We at OOCL are well prepared to serve our customers’ needs in all these areas with our added tonnage, which includes OOCL Atlanta.”
Like OOCL’s other SX class vessels, OOCL Atlanta will be deployed in the Grand Alliance’s service schedule. It will join the “Super Shuttle Express” (SSX) service with port rotation as follows :
Port Kelang / Singapore /Yantian /Hong Kong /Long Beach/ Kaohsiung / Hong Kong / Shekou /Singapore /Port Kelang, in a round trip of 42 days.
