In ports and terminals around the globe, four types of yard equipment – terminal tractors, straddle carriers, rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs), and forklifts – make up the majority of cargo-handling equipment and also account for the majority of air pollution from equipment.
Straddle carriers, standing approximately 12.2-meters tall, weighing 60 tons and powered by diesel engines, were our tradition equipment used to transport containers from dock to the yard. Environmental studies consistently show that replacing older equipment with equipment powered by alternative fuels or electric motors significantly reduces emissions of toxic diesel PM, NOx, and other pollutants.
OOCL Taiwan began its conversion of straddle carriers to rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) in 2003 and completed the exchange of its 9 straddle carriers for 6 RMGs in the spring of 2005. Together with the 8 original RMGs, there are 14 RMGs now in the terminal. Run electrically, the RMGs are emission-free, quiet and provide a much safer working environment at the port. Running on a fixed-rail system, the RMGs are among the safest of all yard-handling equipment at KAOCT.
