Green Machine: OOCL Achieves Highest Compliance Rate
on Environmental Initiative at Port of Long Beach, USA
OOCL is proud to announce that in January 2007, it achieved a compliance rate of 100% for the Voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction program with the Port of Long Beach’s Green Flag Incentive Program for the year of 2006.
The Green Flag Incentive Program was launched by the Port of Long Beach in January 2005 as a voluntary initiative to improve air quality in Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. Vessels were asked to voluntarily reduce their speed through the fairway channel while approaching or leaving Los Angles and Long Beach. Carriers, as listed in Lloyd’s Register, that achieved a rate of 90% compliance, or higher, over a 12-month period, were eligible for a 15% reduced dockage rate in the following year.
OOCL’s vessels achieved the top mark of 100% compliance throughout 2006; 18% above the average for all vessels, including containerships, tankers, and cruise liners at the Port of Long Beach. Impressively, OOCL’s compliance rate was based on 121 vessels entering and departing the Port of Long Beach – the largest number of vessels in fleet with a score of 100%.
The Port of Long Beach reported that the mean/average 2006 compliance rate for all carriers calling at the Port of Long Beach was 81.71%.
