OOCL Brisbane named at Geoje Shipyard, Korea

OOCL is proud to announce on July 17, 2009, the christening of the eighth Panamax class vessel in our line of sixteen 4,500-TEU vessels ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries.

The new vessel was christened the m.v. OOCL Brisbane by sponsor Ms Samantha Honan, the daughter of Mr Dick Honan, Chairman of the Manildra Group.

“Having Ms Honan as the sponsor of for OOCL Brisbane recognizes OOCL’s important relationship with the Manildra Group - Australia’s largest processor of wheat - and one of OOCL’s top customers in Australia,” said Philip Chow, CEO of OOCL, speaking at the vessel’s christening ceremony in Korea.

“We are proud to name OOCL Brisbane after the Port of Brisbane in Australia.  The Port of Brisbane is a vibrant trading hub on the East Coast of Australia, and is one of the top three Australian ports by cargo volume.  It is also the fastest-growing Australian port.  With this strategic location, Brisbane provides a vital link for the import and export of goods from Asia and rest of the world to and from Australia,” said Mr Chow. "We are certain that the OOCL Brisbane will live up to its name by providing a vital link to world trade. With such vessels, OOCL can improve the service we provide to our customers, offering greater economies of scale, increased capacity and higher frequency of sailings."

The OOCL Brisbane will be deployed on the Asia-Australia AEA 2 service. The port rotation is: Yokohama / Osaka / Busan / Shanghai / Ningbo / Hong Kong / Kaohsiung / Melbourne / Sydney / Brisbane and back to Yokohama on a 35-day round trip.
