OOCL Takes the Fuel Efficiency Award for Outstanding Environmental Performance

OOCL proudly received the Fuel Efficiency Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia 2020 for its achievement in fuel savings and efficiency improvements. This annual industry event pays tribute to companies with remarkable achievements in various aspects of Asia’s maritime industry. This year, the award winners were announced and virtually participated in the event via an online celebration on June 23, 2020.

The Fuel Efficiency Award recognizes a company which has demonstrated success in true fuel savings and efficiency improvements with the input of its workforce. In the evaluation process, companies’ fuel efficiency initiatives such as the use of innovative technology and staff incentive scheme have been taken into account.

Over the years, OOCL has been taking a proactive role in implementing various fuel-saving initiatives in its fleet and marine operations, successfully reducing carbon emissions by 60% since 2004.  For example, the latest technologies, such as OOCL’s proprietary Robo-advisor solution, was adopted to actively reduce overall bunker consumption in the fleet. OOCL’s investment in the latest state-of-the-art G-Class vessels have also been performing about 48% better than the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In addition to technological and hardware advancements, the implementation of the fuel saving incentive scheme was able to motivate the company’s crew to contribute their valuable input and effort towards meeting the fuel saving objectives of OOCL.  All these initiatives have been instrumental in contributing to the company’s overall environmental performance.

Commenting on the award win, Mr. Richard Hew, Managing Director of OOCL (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. said: “We are very delighted to receive the “Fuel Efficiency Award” this year. This Award is certainly an affirmation of OOCL’s efforts in achieving fleet operation efficiency. The adoption of technologies in both software and hardware solutions have helped us achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Apart from the fuel saving program onboard our vessels, the Robo-advisor solution we introduced to leverage the Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Centre (GVVMC) and AI technology provided us with incredible berth visibility and fuel optimization models to strengthen the decision-making process of marine operations and thereby improve our services to customers.”

Moving forward, OOCL will continue its effort and contributions to emissions reduction and explore opportunities to address ongoing global climate change and related issues as the industry strives for long-term, effective and sustainable solutions.
