Dear valued customer, 

We would like to inform you that the current water levels on the River Rhine have fallen significantly and continue to impact on inland transportation operations. 

Due to the exceptionally low water levels, barge operators are no longer contractually obliged to transport containers at standard rates and conditions. These restrictions are the result of force majeure circumstances caused by the extraordinary river conditions and are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel, vessels and cargo. Nevertheless, every effort is being made to maintain service continuity wherever operationally feasible. These exceptional operating conditions result in substantial additional costs, which are being passed on through Low Water (LWR) surcharges. ​

Customers are therefore requested to review their inland transportation requirements carefully. Should you not wish to incur the additional costs, please arrange the cancellation of your on-carriage and/or pre-carriage bookings accordingly.  

Please note that the applicable Low Water Surcharge for both import and export shipments will be determined based on the individual sailing date of the respective barge at the seaport and/or affected inland terminal and the water level prevailing on that sailing date.  

The current Low Water surcharge table is attached here for your reference. However, please be advised that these surcharges are subject to change at short notice depending on river conditions and operational requirements. 

Customers are responsible for checking the latest surcharge levels prior to shipment planning.
