India Port Workers’ strike calls off

Unionized port and dock workers in India called off their nationwide strike scheduled for July 16, 2008; that threatened to cripple operations at the country's major ports.

The strike threat was earlier issued by five major labor federations, representing more than 100,000 workers, to press for the implementation of an agreement signed earlier with the Indian Ports Association.

The settlement came after the Chief Labor Commissioner, along with officials of the Shipping Ministry, held talks with Union leaders in New Delhi on Tuesday and agreed to settle all their main demands, including a 13.5-percent interim wage hike and enhanced productivity-linked bonuses.

Potential Port Workers' Strike

Unionized port and dock workers employed at major ports in India have officially served notice to the government for a nationwide strike on 16 July 08 to press for wage improvements and other demands.

The workers' main demands include a 13.5-percent interim wage hike, streamlined eligibility criteria for productivity-linked bonuses, and hiring of more workers to fill existing vacancies at major ports.

Press reports on 11 July 08 indicated talks between MOS and the Union has failed and strike is likely to proceed and it may paralyze all government operated ports. Most of OOCL services, including CIX, AIM, CPX and AIM2 are calling private terminals at NSICT, GTI and MICT.

NSICT (NHV), MICT (Mundra) and CCTL (Chennai) terminal have confirmed that they have made contingency arrangement to avoid any disruption. We will monitor the situation closely and update about any new development.

Keeping all customers hereby posted for any potential disruption and delays to and from India.
