Shipment of Vehicles and Machinery as Dangerous Goods

Customers are advised that, pursuant to the requirements of IMDG Code Amendment 35 which comes into force on January 1st 2012, OOCL will start to treat shipments of all cars and motor vehicles as Dangerous Goods.

According to Amendment 35, motor vehicles or machinery powered by fuel cell or combustion engines shall be consigned as UN 3166 Class 9, and subject to Special Provisions 312, 356, 961 and 962.

Special Provision 961 does however outline some special circumstances under which cargo need not be declared as Dangerous Goods.

Furthermore, for the avoidance of confusion, we have been advised by the UK Competent Authority that the reference to placarding not applying in Special Provision 962 refers to the cargo itself, not the container; therefore containers should be placarded.

We strongly encourage shippers of this cargo type to familiarise themselves with the relevant sections of the Code in detail.

Amendment 35 becomes mandatory on January 1st 2012. However, for compliance purposes, OOCL will require vehicles to be declared as Dangerous Goods from the end of November 2011 to avoid any problems with active shipments going into the New Year.

For bookings affected by this legislation customers are asked to ensure a suitable Dangerous Goods Note is prepared and submitted at the earliest opportunity to enable us to confirm cargo acceptance as promptly as possible.

Should you require any further information please consult your Area Sales Manager or Customer Service Centre.
