Commodity Restrictions

  • Local bkg csv should get familiar with both the prohibited and restricted commodities and make confirmation with the concerned parties if necessary so as to avoid unexpected goods loading on board. Attached restricted commodities for your reference.

  • Road Limitation

    • Maximum allowable axle load 28 tons- Cargo + container tare weights on Kenyan roads.
    • Effective from Sep 16, 2013, maximum allowable axle load is 34 tons.
    • Extra weight containers transported via rail network to ICD Embakassi TBL and Kampala- Uganda on consignee cost/arrangement. 

    Terminal Limitation

    • Terminal Crane Capacity maximum 40 mtons 
    • New 3 SSG with twin capacity to handle 2 lifts capacity 70 tons. 
    • Draft restriction 12.5m 

    Transshipment Restrictions

    • Currently FCL/FCL transshipment NOT allowed unless approved by port General Manager Operation due to space constraints but port undertaking extension of yard capacity to start accepting by end 2013. 
    • FCL/LCL transshipments to Indian Ocean islands, Tanga, Zanzibar, Pemba, Mogadishu etc. Container are stripped and loaded loose on coastal carriers.

    Dangerous Cargo Restrictions 

    • Class 1.1 restricted for discharge. Container inspected on stream/anchorage before berthing and discharged on 1st sling on direct delivery basis. Extra costs on ship movement, inspection, escorts, fire brigade.
    • Other classes MUST adhere to IMDG on precautions like proper packaging + labeling. All DG under direct delivery ex hook. 
    • Merchant to follow local guidelines including authorization to import the classified DG goods by govt institution.

    Customs Requirements

    • Cargo Manifest should be submitted to customs 48 hours prior arrival of ships.
    • Cargo Manifest has to show HS Code and both the cargo gross weight and net weight.
    • Baplie weights to tally with cargo weights + container tare weights

    Port Regulations

    • Mombasa port is a customs bonded area.
    • Restriction of safety precautions.
    • Port equipment/capacity as per attached separately
