
Sri Lanka lies off the Southern tip of India, and is separated from India by the narrow Palk Straits. The administrative capital is Sri Jayewardenepura and the Commercial Center is Colombo. The total land area is 65,610 square kilometers and the total population is around 21 million, with a growth of approximately 1.5% per annum.

Sri Lanka's National Day is February 4th. The government structure is led by the Executive President, who is the head of state and the commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, and directly elected by the people every five years. The legislature, which exercises the sovereignty of the people, consists of 225 representatives, from whom the President appoints as Prime Minister.

Colombo, the principal port in Sri Lanka has kept pace with the accelerated activity in the other sectors of the economy. The port has a water area of 184.6 hectares and 25 alongside berths, including seven main and four feeder container berths. The maximum draught is 14.85 meters and the maximum depth is 15 meters.
JCT and SAGT are the main terminals, of which JCT is government-owned, while SAGT is private. OOCL vessels call at SAGT. The Port of Colombo is CSI compliant, and effective 1 July 2006, the Mega Port Initiative Inspection scheme has been initiated, resulting in all import, export and transshipment containers being scanned.

Garments/Textiles, Tea, Rubber & Rubber products, Fisheries products, Gems & Jewelery, Coconut, Fiber, and Spices.
Main imports consists of Petroleum products, Machinery & Equipment, Crude Oil, Building Materials, Paper & paper boards, Chemicals, Vehicles, Pharmaceutical goods, and Milk Powder.
