A major earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan province at 14:28 local time (06:28 GMT), on May 12, 2008. Its effects were felt most strongly in Chengdu, which is located about 93 km from the epicenter of the quake. The effects were also felt in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shaanxi and other provinces.

While we are pleased to report that all OOCL China staff and facilities are safe, OOCL is highly concerned about the scale of the disaster and we are examining ways in which we can offer support to the victims, in the form of monetary aid or transportation assistance. 

Due to the danger of aftershocks, all enterprises and schools in Chengdu will be closed on May 13 and May 14, as directed by the city government. OOCL’s Chengdu office will also remain closed for those two days. We are waiting for further notice from the city government as to when we can return to business as usual.

All sea ports and river ports in China are operating normally, although some railways and roads are blocked. We will continue to update you on any developments which may affect your import and export business.
