Customer Advisory - New Orleans Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna
Please note that as of September 2,10:00 hours CDT, Hurricane Gustav has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression. Gustav made landfall yesterday, approximately 70 miles southwest of New Orleans at Cocodrie, Louisiana. The current five-day storm path is projected by the National Weather Service to move from Shreveport, LA to southwest Arkansas by Friday, September 5. Areas in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi have received up to 8 inches of rainfall, in some isolated locations, as much as 15 inches. Gustav wind speeds have declined to 25 mph. A flood watch remains in effect in most of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. A tornado watch is in place in Louisiana and Mississippi.
BNSF, UPRR, NSRR and CSX closed their New Orleans rail facilities Friday, August 29. Rail cargo bound for New Orleans will be held until the impact of Gustav is better understood. As a precaution, BNSF and UPRR have stopped New Orleans and Houston-bound trains over the weekend until the impact of Gustav is known. UPRR has re-directed New Orleans NS interchange rail traffic to Memphis and Florida-bound CSX rail traffic to St. Louis.
In many locations, electric power is out of service, preventing rail carriers from re-opening facilities.
BNSF is holding West Coast import New Orleans and Houston rail cargo at its off-dock Hobart ramp and has requested all marine terminals also hold New Orleans and Houston-bound cargo.
Tropical Storm Hanna is building in the southern Atlantic area. The National Weather Service predicts Hanna will reach Florida’s east coast near Jacksonville by Friday, September 5, then the storm begins to track up the east coast through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York.
