The Country
The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands with a land area of 299,764 square kilometers. It stretches from the south of China to the northern tip of Borneo. The country has over a hundred ethnic groups and a mixture of foreign influences which have molded a unique Filipino culture. The Philippine coastline adds up to 17,500 km. with three prominent bodies of water surround the archipelago: the Pacific Ocean on the east, the South China Sea on the west and north, and the Celebes Sea on the south. This position accounts for much of the variations in geographic, climatic and vegetational conditions in the country.
The Philippines is the third largest English Speaking country in the world and is divided into three geographical areas: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao with a total population of 80 million people.
Philippine Exports boast of an updtrend in the first quarter of 2006, with a 13 percent upswing over the same period in 2005, totalling 10.8 billion US dollars in value.
