MANILA - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will implement a total daytime truck ban starting Dec. 13 to ease traffic congestion that it expects to be 20 percent more this Christmas season. In order not to crimp commerce, however, the total daytime truck ban exempts those routes from South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to Pier and vice versa via South Superhighway; and from North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to Pier and vice versa via A. Bonifacio Avenue.

Trucks on these routes must observe the current truck ban windows: from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said Thursday truckers’ associations have agreed to implement a total daytime truck ban from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. starting December 13 until 20.

The setup ban is similar to the one enforced during the Board of Governors meeting of the Asian Development Bank in  2012, Tolentino said.

Major thoroughfares covered by the total daytime truck ban include Marcos Highway, Aurora Boulevard, Katipunan, Commonwealth, C5, Quezon Boulevard, among others. No trucks shall be allowed to enter these major thoroughfares.

The total truck ban on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) from Magallanes, Makati City to North Avenue in Quezon City shall remain in effect for 24 hours, from Monday to Sunday.
