Taiwan is located on the East of Asia. The Tropic of Cancer runs through Taiwan separating it into subtropical and tropical climate zones. Taiwan and its adjacent islands have an area of nearly 36,000 square kilometers. The main island of Taiwan, is about 394 km (245 miles) long and 144 km (90 miles) wide at the broadest point.
Taiwan used to be the world's factory from the 1980's to 1990's. Today, Taiwan outsources and exports many products such as IT technologies, tools and machinery, steel, and plastic goods. China, U.S., EU, ASEAN and Japan markets are some of Taiwan's major business and trading partners.
In dollar amounts, Taiwan's exports and imports were US$258.98 billion and US$213.20 billion respectively. Taiwan's current foreign reserve is at US$451.5 billion, the 3rd largest in the world. GDP per capita is US$23,573.
Transportation is very convenient in Taiwan. It only takes 90 minutes to travel from the North to South of the island via the High Speed Rail. Taiwan is also famous for its wide variety tasty food and cuisine, such as Xiao Long Bao and beef noodle soup.
The Taoyuen International Airport is a major transportation gateway. There are four international sea ports in Taiwan, namely Keelung, Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. The major port of Kaohsiung represents nearly 80% of total throughput each year. In addition to the major container ports, there are also other important inland ICD for trade at Wutu, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu in North Taiwan.
