The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is located in the heart of South-East Asia. It lies between the People's Republic of China in the North and the Gulf of Thailand in the South. Vietnam is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Eastern Sea in the east and the People's Democratic Republic of Laos and the Kingdom of Cambodia in the West.
Vietnam's mainland territory roughly resembles the shape of the letter "S", occupies a land areas of 331,041 square kilometers with 3,260 kilometers of spectacular coastline. Mountains and tropical forest cover three quarters of Vietnam.
Hanoi, the nation's capital, lies on the banks of the Red River. It's not only the country's political, cultural and educational capital but also the most important economic center in the north. Ho Chi Minh City, the new name for Saigon, lies just north of the Mekong Delta in the south, and is the largest city in Vietnam. The city, with a population of six million, functions as the country's economic heart and business hub. Danang, in the central part of the country, is the third largest city.
Vietnam is a member of the UN, ASEAN, ARF, ASEM, APEC. Vietnam took up a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in January 2008 for the first time. Vietnam has been formally acceded to the WTO on 11 January 2007, becoming the body’s 150th member.
