September

  • OOCL signed for two 4,250-TEU panamax vessels with China State Shipping Corporation and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd., on September 21, 2004.  The signing marks the first newbuilding order OOCL has made with a Chinese shipbuilding Company.
  • OOCL Japan has beaten 1,894 other vessels to win the inaugural Pusan Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF) Best Qualified One Vessel.

August

  • OOCL is the only Hong Kong carrier to obtain official certification to operate as a ‘Ship Agent’ in China. Under the current regulations in the PRC, as a Ship Agent, OOCL can now provide communication and documentation services between OOCL, shippers, consignees, and Customs.
  • Orient Overseas (International) Limited (“OOIL”) Group today announced a profit before taxation of US$283.3 million compared with US$88.7 million for the same period last year. After taxation and minority interests, the Group reported a profit of US$268.4 million, an increase of US$188.9 million from the US$79.5 million earned during the first half of 2003.  Interim dividend of US12 cents (HK94 cents) per ordinary share will be issued.

July

  • OOCL announced the establishment of its own offices in Denmark and Sweden and the appointment of an agency in Norway, effective from September 1, 2004.

June

  • OOCL's fleet has gained certified the International Ship Security Certificate (ISSC) by ABS, a Recognised Security Organization (RSO) for its full compliance to the provisions of International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, SOLAS chapter X 1-2 and the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA)
  • OOCL through its logistics arm, "OOCL Logistics" has recently contract a 13,400 square-meter warehouse in Waigaoqiao Logistics Park.

May

  • OOCL announced that the China/Middle East Service of its Intra-Asia trade has been renamed Asia Middle East Service (AMS).  AMS will continue to provide the full range of logistics and transportation service  between Far East and the Middle East, Pakistan and India.
  • With effect on 1 June, 2004, OOCL Logistics will move its headquarters back to Hong Kong.  Mr. Allan T.S.Wong, a member of Executive Committee of OOCL Group, will be appointed the CEO and Mr. John Firman, the Vice Chairman.  Under the helm of both of them, OOCL Logistics will be structured into three business units to establish clear focus in the following target segments : International Logistics, China Logistics and E-Business.
  • OOCL Ningbo, built by Samsung Heavy Industries, was delivered to OOCL by Samsung Heavy Industries and was named at Beilun Terminal, Port of Ningbo on 14 May, 2004.
  • OOCL announced that it has opened its own office, OOCL (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. (OVCL) in Vietnam, and the office has commenced operation in May, 2004.  This office is a full service office and will be fully responsible for all OOCL’s activities in Vietnam ensuring a high level of customer service
  • KTX-3, the new addition to OOCL’s industry-beating KTX Suite, will start operation on May 24, 2004.  KTX3 will deploy 2 X 1,216-TEU vessels, OOCL Achievement and OOCL Advance on the following ports of call: Tokyo / Yokohama / Nagoya / Hong Kong / Manila / Shekou / Hong Kong / Tokyo.

April

  • OOCL announced details of the newly modified STX (Setouchi/Taiwan Express service).
  • ANL Container Line and ACE group members, China Shippig Container Lines and Orient Overseas Line Ltd have jointly set up an ANL/ACE North Asia Service, AANA, which will commerce operation in mid May, 2004
  • The naming ceremony of OOCL Qingdao, an 8063 teu vessel was held today at the Samsung Heavy Industrial Shipyard in Busan. This marks the delivery of the fifth SX class vessels built by Samsung to OOCL.

March

  • OOIL announced a profit after taxation and minority interests of US$329.0 million for the year ended 31st December, 2003, a 536% increase over the attributable profit of US$51.7 million recorded in 2002.  The Directors are recommending a final dividend of US12.8 cents (HK$1) per share. The Directors are also recommending a bonus issue of shares on the basia of one bonus share for every 10 existing issued ordinary shares and have resolved to change the board lot size for trading in OOIL shares from 2,000 to 1,000.

February

  • m.v. OOCL Hamburg , the fourth of the 12 SX-class vessels that OOCL has order from Samsung Heavy Industries was named on 20 Fbruary, 2004  in Geoje Shipyard of Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea.

January

  • m.v. OOCL Rotterdam, the third SX-class post-Panamax container vessel (8,063 TEUs) ordered by OOCL with Samsung Heavy Industries, was named at the PSA Pasir Pajang Terminals in Singapore on 26 January, 2004.
