OOCL signed for two 4,250-TEU panamax vessels with China State Shipbuilding Corporation and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd., on September 21, 2004. The signing marks the first newbuilding order OOCL has made with a Chinese shipbuilding company.

OOCL Japan has beaten 1,894 other vessels to win the inaugural Pusan Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries' (MOMAF) Best Qualified One Vessel.Of the 1,894 vessels inspected, 10 were chosen as 'high-quality' vessels, with OOCL Japan coming out on top.

OOCL today signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries to build four 4,500 TEU vessels. The vessels are expected to be delivered during 2007.

OOCL is the only Hong Kong carrier to obtain official certification to operate as a ‘Ship Agent’ in China. Under the current regulations in the PRC, as a Ship Agent, OOCL can now provide communication and documentation services between OOCL, shippers, consignees, and Customs.

Orient Overseas (International) Limited (“OOIL”) Group today announced a profit before taxation of US$283.3 million compared with US$88.7 million for the same period last year. After taxation and minority interests, the Group reported a profit of US$268.4 million, an increase of US$188.9 million from the US$79.5 million earned during the first half of 2003.
